The Investment delivers Imagesetter quality films from inkjet devices
London (England), July 18th, 2014 – Letterpress and Flexo printing company Riviera Labels have brought film production in-house following the purchase of the Star Plate inkjet to film solution. The company who specializes in short run, high quality label production now have a complete in house platemaking solution providing increased flexibility and control.
Directors Chris Bastow and Peter Burnard who founded Riviera Labels in 1998, were previously reliant on external sources but found the supply of films becoming increasingly problematic.
“We were buying in films from service providers who were using old imagesetting devices to produce negative films for our platemaking” notes Peter Burnard. “Over the past year or so, this form of film production was becoming increasingly problematic due to these imagesetters coming to the end of their life-span. With prices of traditional imagesetting film also rising, we needed a replacement solution which would deliver the same quality output we were used to”.
Peter and Chris had previously looked at Digital plate making but found the ROI on CTP too restrictive. Their search for an alternative cost effective solution, led them to Label Expo in 2013 where they were shown the Star Plate solution at the Dantex Graphics stand. As part of the evaluation process, Dantex subsequently provided both Star Plate films and Printing plates for the print test. Riviera, who print at high screen rulings up to 175lpi ran a full print production comparison between Imagesetter and Star Plate film output.
“ The printed results were just great with the Star Plate film output matching that of the conventional imagesetter” said Chris Baston “In fact with the inclusion of Smart Screen and the ability to hold a 1% dot on the plate, we have increased the quality of our production which means we are providing our customers with a better product – it’s a win-win situation”.

Star Plate is a digital imaging solution designed for direct inkjet to film with the ability to produce high quality halftone screening. The solution has been developed to produce Imagesetter quality positive and negative films. The resultant high density films are perfect for Flexo or Letterpress platemaking or for Silk Screen exposure.
Smart Screen is a Flexo and Letterpress screening technology that has been developed to produce visually superior tonal ranges, particularly in highlight areas. It requires minimal changes in Prepress or Print room – either in process or hardware changes. As a consequence, it makes jobs simpler to prepare in Prepress and easier to print in the Press room.
